Construction of electric code lock system

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Due to the advancement of science and technology throughout the world, there is a consequent increase in the rate of crime. As a result of this, it is extremely important to ensure security of oneself and one’s valuable belongings. Even with the advent of mechanical locks, the crime rate still has increased owing to the fact that these locks are easily broken. Consequently, there is a need for other types of locks especially electronic locks.

In this modern age, security has become an important issue in the society. This sector is experiencing a huge diversification. Where the reliability of already existing systems has been looked into for the possibility of creating better systems that are smarter and more effective, to realize a digital locking mechanism with an effort that allows users to use numerical password to open locks. When the user enters the right numerical values, a relay is turned on which in turn ignite an actuator to open a door lock. The significance of this idea over the old mechanical key and lock system is that it eliminates the need for a physical key and danger of misplacement.

This study presents the construction of an electronic combination lock with a keypad mounted on the door and also a remote where the secret code will be keyed. The code unit, which operates with a 10-switch (non- matrix) keypad was designed to control an electromagnetic door lock with a four– digit code.

For clarity and neatness of presentation, we outlined the article into five major chapters or sections. The First chapter or section gives a general introduction of security systems and combinational locks. Chapter two gives presentation of related work. In chapter three, detail descriptions of the implementation procedures are presented. Chapter Four presents the experimental results and discussion of the results. In chapter Five, we conclude the work with some recommendations. Finally, references used in the manuscript are presented at the end of the report.

MOTIVATION

The concept of securing assets and valuables is an imperative one, to a very large extent. The feasibility depends among other things on the sort of guarding device employed. By the time an appropriate code sequences have been established, it becomes very difficult for any intruder to gain access without the knowledge of the security code. The currently obtainable tools for this kind of applications are at all the times costly, and/or required great skill on the part of the user. These short comings constitute the major motivation for the conception of this construction.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In home doors, the existing system is a simple metal key, however, pose three main problems. Firstly they are prone to lock picking, which leave the home vulnerable to break-ins. Secondly, during a break-in, owners of the lock are often unaware that their homes are being broken into or who has broken into their homes. Lastly, physical keys are obsolete, bulky, inconvenient and often take up space which might lead to keys being misplaced or even lost.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE CONSTRUCTION

To construct a cheap, affordable and effective security system for buildings, cars, safes, doors and gates using locally available materials.

The objectives of this project is as follows,

To construct a system that could be used to realise a digital locking mechanism.

To experiment the application of electronic devices as safe and effective locks.

To prevent unauthorized person from having access to ones properties through the use of wrong codes.

To have a specified number of attempts which when exceeded system should be blocked temporarily. The system designer then provides a master unlock code to restore system's function.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

It is of very great significance to have our systems secured against illegal access. This project aims at providing a handy affordable electronic code lock device to keep equipment away from unauthorized usage. Therefore, it will serve as a potential prototype for manufactures and this write up will serve as documentation for future research in this field.
