ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cholera is a waterborne life-threatening form of dehydrating diarrhea; in spite of this, it can be easily prevented by proper hygienic measures. However, prevention of cholera is extremely dependent on the knowledge and attitude of the general public toward the symptoms and preventive practices of cholera. Therefore, we assessed the knowledge and attitude of residents in Sokoto metropolis.
Methods: We used a cross-sectional study design. A multistage sampling was used to select 420 respondents (107 females and 313 males) . We used a validated, interviewer-administered
questionnaire to collect data. Means frequencies and proportions were reported for univariate
analysis, while Chi-square and crudes Odds Ratio were reported for bivariate analysis. We
reported the adjusted Odds Ratios and their 95% Confidence Interval.
Results: The mean age of the participants was 35.6 ± 10.5, 74.5% were males, 71.9% were married and 70.3% a have at least secondary school leaving certificate. 420 respondents were
included in the study and only 11.2% had good knowledge of symptoms and 85.7% had good knowledge of spread but only 21% had overall good knowledge, majority of the respondents have poor attitude towards preventive practices on cholera and only few have a good knowledge of preventive practices. The findings showed a significant (p < 0.05) association between the respondents’ knowledge and sex, education, attitudes and practice. In the adjusted model, male sex, having informal education, and having a less positive attitude toward cholera were the significant predictors to having poor knowledge.
Conclusion: The level of overall knowledge of cholera among the residents of Sokoto
metropolis’ urban slums is poor and there is also poor attitude and preventive practices.
